How to Set Up Email on macOS

Apple Mail on macOS supports business email through IMAP and SMTP. IMAP keeps messages on the server and synchronizes mailbox state with other devices.

Add the Account

  1. Open System Settings > Internet Accounts.
  2. Select Add Account > Add Other Account > Mail Account.
  3. Enter your name, email address and password.
  4. If automatic setup fails, choose IMAP as the account type.
  5. Enter the incoming and outgoing server names supplied by your provider.

Verify Server Settings

  • Use IMAP port 993 with SSL/TLS.
  • Confirm SMTP port 465 or port 587 with STARTTLS.
  • Try the full email address as the username.

Synchronization and Certificate Issues

If the account appears offline, use Window > Connection Doctor to identify the failing server. Verify that Sent and Drafts mailboxes map to the correct server folders. Never permanently approve a certificate warning before checking the hostname; update stale credentials in Keychain Access when necessary.
